X, the social media platform (formerly Twitter), has now allowed users to search for Taylor Swift again after a temporary block. This action was taken because of a rise in fake explicit Taylor Swift AI images created using AI technology, causing concern among fans and officials.
Joe Benarroch, X’s head of business operations, explained that the search block was a precautionary measure for user safety. He assured users that X would actively monitor and remove any attempts to spread non-consensual nudity images, which are strictly prohibited on the platform.
The incident with Taylor Swift AI-generated images highlighted the larger issue of deepfakes, where AI manipulates videos or images by altering faces or bodies. A 2023 study reported a 550% increase in the creation of doctored images since 2019, fueled by the emergence of AI.
The White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, expressed alarm at the spread of AI-generated photos of Taylor Swift, calling for legislation to address the misuse of AI technology on social media. She emphasized the role of platforms like X in enforcing rules to prevent the spread of misinformation and non-consensual intimate imagery.

Some US politicians are pushing for new laws to criminalize the creation and distribution of deepfake images. Notably, in the UK, the sharing of deepfake pornography became illegal under the Online Safety Act in 2023.
