The actress' death was confirmed by her children on Monday evening

"We are sad to inform you that our incredible, fierce and loving mother has passed away after a battle with cancer, they said in a statement. 

Valerie Bertinelli wrote on Twitter, "Oh Kirstie, Rest in Peace." 

Alley earned an Emmy Award and furthermore a Golden Globe Award for her breakout job as Rebecca Howe in the last part of the '80s sitcom "Cheers,"
