How Wendy Williams Is Coping with Dementia and Aphasia

Wendy Williams, the former host of the popular daytime talk show “The Wendy Williams Show,” has been diagnosed with dementia and aphasia, her care team confirmed on Thursday.

According to a press release, Williams received the official diagnosis of primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) in 2023, after undergoing a series of medical tests. Aphasia affects language and communication abilities, while FTD is a progressive disorder that impacts behavior and cognitive functions.

The press release stated that the diagnosis has enabled Wendy Williams to receive the medical care she requires and that she can still do many things for herself. It also said that Williams has maintained her trademark sense of humor and is receiving the support and care she needs.

The announcement came before the premiere of a new Lifetime documentary, “Where is Wendy Williams?” which explores Williams’ abrupt exit from public life. The documentary features the first public comments from Williams’ family members, who expressed their concerns and love for her.

Williams’ health issues have been a subject of speculation for years, as she displayed signs of cognitive decline and erratic behavior on her show and in public appearances. She also struggled with various health conditions, such as Graves’ disease, lymphedema, and substance abuse.

Williams’ show was canceled in 2022 after she took a medical leave due to her worsening condition. She was also placed under a financial guardianship due to concerns about her capacity.

Wendy Williams’ team said they came forward to raise awareness about aphasia and FTD and to support others facing similar circumstances. They hope to eliminate the stigma associated with dementia and encourage more empathy and understanding for those affected.
