Poor Things, inspired by Alasdair Gray’s novel, offers a fresh take on Frankenstein within Victorian Scotland. Stone portrays Bella Baxter, a woman revived by a crazed scientist after she drowns herself to flee an abusive marriage. Bella navigates a string of escapades and challenges, grappling with her sense of self and memory along the way.

The film, which received 11 BAFTA nominations, also won the award for best-adapted screenplay. It is considered a frontrunner for the upcoming Academy Awards, where it has 10 nominations, including best picture.

Emma Stone, who previously won an Oscar for La La Land in 2017, said that she was honored to be part of such a creative and daring project. She also expressed her hope that the film would inspire more women to pursue their dreams and passions, regardless of the obstacles they may face.

“I’m so proud of this film and what it represents. It’s a story of a woman who refuses to be defined by anyone else, who finds her own voice and her own way of living. I think that’s something we can all relate to, especially in these challenging times. I hope that Poor Things will encourage more women to be bold and brave, and to follow their hearts. Thank you so much for this amazing BAFTA 2024 win.
